I had decided to play on a new character myself, although I wasn’t planning on diving straight into the UW. I figured I’d recap my experience with a new character here as well.

I was fortunate enough to spawn near some old ruins, that still had some items laying around. Felt pretty nice to luck out and get some basic accessories and an obsidian spear. Felt like a pretty good start, even though I didn’t have a safe place to live or drop things off yet. I basically ended up just leaving things on floors and hoping noone took it all while I was off trying to gather things to build a simple shelter. I quickly ran into the trouble many new players have, of not having inventory space and having to repeatedly drop things, or leave things behind that I felt would be useful.

I did cheat a little, in using my prior knowledge of the game to head to an abandoned base I was already aware of, and looting even more stuff from there. I ended up with a full set of bronze gear, as well as warrior rings, so I was ready for combat. I really felt like I was having a good start with being lucky enough to find the abandoned gear.

From there I decided to try and continue my quest hunt to get them finished, since it’s kind of the only direction to go in the game naturally. Eventually I got to the quest to go down under ground to kill a bat. I found some stairs nearby, but when I went down there, it was almost completely covered in dirt, so I figured I’d try and dig around a little to try and find things. I’m assuming this was mostly bad luck, since I don’t remember it being quite as bad normally, but after 3-5 minutes of solid digging at a wall, I only managed to about 3-4 tile away from the stairs… So, I gave up and went back to surface, and again, used some priory knowledge, and went to some public stairs that I know are almost always kept up. I eventually found a bat, around the same time I found a hole. Knowing how many new players I’ve gone to help, they instinctively try and go to the hole to see what it is, and fall through, so I repeated this.

Immediately upon entering the underworld room I dropped into, I was pleased to see a skeleton, and a snake… and then I saw it…
“Blud xtestp has fallen on underworld level 4! They were level 11 and skilled at destruction. Killed by a Rust Golem.”
I was dropped in a corner, and blocked by the skeleton and snake, so I couldn’t get around the rust golem. I hit it once, maybe twice and then died. I didn’t lose all my stuff, which was nice, but I figured it must have been that rare spawn fluke I was told about, so it would be pretty safe to try and go get my gear back.

I ventured down into the UW once more. I was pleased to see a fallen knight, since for the very first level of the UW, it feels like that would be a more accurate “slightly more difficult mob for the current level” that was discussed. But it was on the other side of a wall, so I left it alone, and carried on with my search. Then I ran into a flame demon. Fortunately I know to kite, but even still, I only barely managed to kill it. Right as I did, a mage showed up on the other side of a wall, and with no way to fight back or block damage, I was forced to run. I was lucky enough that it missed 3 shots on me, otherwise I would have been dead without a way to fight back. Sadly in my running, I had no choice by to run straight past a room, that much to my surprise, had a Reaper in it, which lead to this:
“Bllud xtestp has fallen on underworld level 4! They were level 8 and skilled at destruction. Killed by a Reaper.”
Then I respawned, and he instantly teleported to me again, and hit me, so I couldn’t equip armor…
“Blud xtestp has fallen! They were level 7 and skilled at destruction. Killed by a Reaper.”
“Blud xtestp has fallen! They were level 6 and skilled at destruction. Killed by a Reaper.”
Eventually I managed to punch him to death, but by then I had lost almost all my gear in random parts all over the world, and just didn’t feel like trying to go find it.

Now, could I have run from all these things immediately, knowing what I do as someone with almost 6 months of experience with the game? of course! but would normal players know there are near endgame mobs spawning on the very first floor of the underworld? I highly doubt it, and by the time you try get even a hit or 2 in, you’re almost dead. This patch has been out only a couple days, and a we were informed that there would be ‘rare’ spawns of ‘slightly more difficult’ mobs, that wouldn’t likely be seen again for weeks, and yet I managed to find even more of of these mobs that can kill a lower level player in only a few hits (flame demon takes what? 5-6 hits, that can come rapidfire, to melt you? not to mention with things like mages firing over walls, and reapers teleporting in behind you) On my main account, I really don’t care about this for myself, as I enjoy hunting and killing all of these things, but, as stated from the beginning, new players don’t know to turn and run instantly from certain mobs that are out of their league, and in some cases, even if they thought to, there are things that can trap them, so it wouldn’t even matter. This large amount of high level mobs on the very first floor (not to mention green dragons showing up by the 3rd floor of the UW, and possibly sooner) just amazes me. I still feel the UW is one of the best parts of the game, and should introduce players a little more, let them wade into it, instead of throwing them, not just into a deep end, but straight into a shark, but what do I know.

I had already started this player/project, which is the main reason I’m posting here now. In all likelyhood, this will be my last post, and last attempt to give feedback for the game, since my opinion isn’t wanted. I’ve been outgrown, I’m just an oldman that’s dragging things down. I’ve been playing ‘ML’ for over a decade now, I’ve been a fan since I was a kid, and still remember dreaming back in school of being part of… what was it called… “JH Caves” or something like that I want to say…(I share the J.H. initials, so that fed the dream even more back then) I never really thought I’d get to the point of saying goodbye, but legends is gone entirely now, and apparently I’m killing the only pieces that remain, so I should just let go now. Goodbye ML

Ok! I clearly need to be speaking up here!

First, I’m going to address some basic points, you say that veteran players have mixed feelings because it doesn’t cater?! This is ridiculous, since the bulk of the issues are because of our concern for new players! Nefer even mentioned the exact same lock issue that Native did! Not to mention, at least half of her post was praising the positive things! If you only praise things, and give zero negative feedback on bad things, then there is no chance for anything to be improved.

I’d also like to point out that Native isn’t a new or returning player, he’s someone that quit already, and other than reading the notes for 2 minutes, he hasn’t seen any of the actual effects of this update.

On the topic of ‘less macro and alt’… HA! fine, people stopped macroing exploration, great, I have absolutely zero issue with this, in fact I think the only issue that has been brought up with this, is that the counter measure is so severe, that exploration is insanely difficult to level up now at all, which is a problem for noobs, not veterans… however, in 10-11 hours of just hanging out, the only notable events for the day, were 3 people reaching a level achievement… ALL 3 of which… were ALTS! What you are perceiving as ‘less alts’, is in actuality, just less people being interested in the game at all.

OH WAIT! I forgot one! Remember that EXTREMELY rare ‘slightly more difficult, than the uw level’ mob spawn that only happens once every few weeks?(even though I personally ran into both a skeleton lord and flame demon on the very first level of the underworld almost immediately upon spawning the level for the first time) Well the other thing that happened was… “dendav dendav has fallen on underworld level 7! They were level 47 and skilled at hunting. Killed by a Green Dragon.” Clearly these difficult mobs never show up in lower levels… And you know, I MUST be complaining because I’m terrified of all these mobs… not like I haven’t slain literally hundreds of them or anything…

Gold has been nerfed, changed, tweaked, and nerfed I think over half a dozen times since I’ve been playing. I’ve taken issue with it almost every step of the way… but not because I can’t get gold… but because, as mentioned by both nefer and native, for new and solo players it’s nearly impossible to harvest decent amounts of gold in this new system. I’d be willing to bet even a semi-experienced player could barely harvest a few dozen gold in nearly a full day of working at it. And yet, when I held a FL gold gathering party, we still managed to raise well over 400 gold in just a few hours. You keep talking about so many decisions being based on data collected as people play, but you’re not accounting for the fact that the current bulk of the active player base aren’t ‘normal’ players. They are an active, motivated, well-organized group that does things beyond what typical players will do. You are basing decisions on skewed data, and not even realizing it, then scolding players for trying to point it out.

If FL is motivated to accomplish something, nerfs won’t stop it. Robin had bragged about having the best, top of the line suit for UW, that he didn’t need to do anymore, because it was the best. I put over twice as much in pretty much every aspect to full sets of bows for FL members… TWICE… not to mention pouring OVER double the energy he put into his whole entire set, into my sword alone. With that amount of time, energy and devotion, how could you not expect exceptional/unnatural results? And keep in mind, all that was just from 1 player, not even accounting for all the other members’ efforts!

Speaking of those bows, that reminds me of a good transition. I spent thousands of resources remaking bows everyone after the originals were taken away. This included stacks of +1 bows, which FL distributed to newer players that might have been hurt by the bug that removed all + bows… including a new bow to… Native! who had actually received the first one from FL. FL has spent hundreds of thousands of resources trying to help new players, and yet somehow it’s always overlooked. Before 80-90% of today’s players existed, we build public buildings like the ‘noob inn’ for players to heal, before there was ways to heal other than beds. We also included large kitchens, for players to cook food, or smelt ores, when they didn’t have fire pits yet. These sorts of projects were griefed dozens of times, and yet we kept spending our own resources and rebuilding them to try and help new players. FL has down more to build and maintain roads for new players than any other person or group in the game, this wasn’t for personal use, I specifically designed a new road, that is closed off and UG to demonstrate what it would be like if I orchestrated private roads, which I could have done the entire time to prevent griefing. Many FL members routinely would venture down into the UW, and give up our personal hard earned lanterns, to help rescue new players that accidentally fell down and couldn’t figure out how to get out, not to mention help with questions, or even items to help people get started. Lets not forget the market place! FL was the one that started the area for the market place. Cleared the area, designed and paved all the roads(yet again) for the layout, even paid you Ivana, from our own stocks, so you could afford to relocate so there could be a more centralized marketplace for players to go. And when you and everyone else sold items for ridiculous, overpriced amounts, like basic gear for thousands of building materials, or 140 arrows for 30 gold and nonsense like that… FL loaded our market with things like large stacks of food, and pickaxes for people to easily be able to get increased yields on one of the most valuable early game resources in exchange for people’s used/useless hair and body potions… then loaded up with bronze gear, and good mining accessories for small amounts like only 50 stone. We also put up some basic gold/silver exchange rates for people that had a hard time getting one of the other, this was done at flat rates, instead of profit, like sooo many people told me should be done. How do you think we’ve done all this, and I’m quite sure there is plenty more that I’m not even mentioning(Ooo, just remembered what I’d think is a majority of the work on the wiki), and not thought about the fact that helping new players is important? I think we possibly had one of the only markets in the entire game that purposely operated on a loss, instead of aiming for huge profits.

GAH! So much more I want to talk about, but really, I don’t know if I care enough anymore to go on much longer. So I’ll leave on one final note… I would be willing to bet, that I am THE only player that has been playing actively and consistently for going on 6 months now. Even SPKrylos(who I believe created shortly before me) has taken time away from the game. I’ve played, and helped new players for longer than any other player around. I’ve leveled past 80/100 more times from low levels than almost any other player I think also, and I’ve died down clear to L0, from higher levels, than any other player, especially with full gameplay experience and not pure farming. I think it’s just plain wrong, both in principle, and as a dev, to effectively say you don’t care about my opinion because of this. Telling your most active and dedicated portion of the player base you don’t give a fuck what they think is how you kill a game, not how you build it up.

It feels bridges would be easier than that Robin. They can function just like roads, only with different texture of course, then the rafting script can just be set to behave the same as water to move ‘under’ them. Maybe do a bit of work for gfx to show them over the player/raft also, but again, doesn’t feel like any layer rework stuff needs to be done. Just a little raft scripting.

+1 on most of the combat oriented ideas. I think hammer having a wide swing and having the potential to hit up to 5 targets in a perfect situation would be really cool. If 2 handed weapons received a nice damage boost like they should, then it could definitely be a viable weapon. It would still be unwieldy and dangerous in groups, but that feels like a realistic and important thing for such a powerful weapon to need to consider. I know I love my sword, but when I’m down with a group, I often feel I am doing more damage to party than the mobs are half the time due to the wonderful mix of lag and bad positioning. I still love my sword however, and just make more of an effort to be careful. It adds another aspect to the game that people don’t even realize is there usually, especially solo players.

On dyes… definitely would be a cool addition, although I probably wouldn’t use it personally, however I’d love to be able to dye my robe. It would be a bit of a project, either would need multiple sprites for every hairstyle/clothing style, which is quite time consuming to prepare, and doesn’t allow much for expansion, but still would be really cool. I’m not nearly as up on my programming skills as I should be, so don’t even know if it’s possible, but IF you could have neutral colored sprites for everything that only emphasizes the shades involved and not set colors, and then scriptually tint/shade them when drawing, and just have each one have a ‘default’ tint to start with, it feels like dyes would be a nice addition that allows for quick and easy updating/expansion to the sprite sets, and allow for some really unique looks.

anyway, there is probably things I wanted to touch on that I’m missing, but oh well, no more time for now. Good post with lots of ideas to get the juices flowing. Thx Odovir

Edit: thought just occurred to me. We already have color tinted particle effects, so unless they are drawn manually, and not from an image that is just tinted, then there is a chance the tinting idea might be possible(don’t know if it would be worth the time/work required from them to make it with everything else that needs work, I’m just talking from a technical standpoint, it might be possible)

I was going to leave this alone, but since Rin has been pming nonstop about this issue and made another forum post on it, I suppose I should address a couple things here.

Should the marketplace be safe? Yes, that is generally a good thing. However, if any player can simply say they saw someone hitting a market stall at any point, and then extort resources out of them, how likely do you think it will be that anyone will ever want to go to the marketplace?

As far as the proof issue goes, in the past, if someone physically caught someone else breaking their stuff, they’d kill them or warn them and be done with the matter. Or if evidence was left, it could be taken into consideration. Though I feel opening the option for any player to claim something about someone else, and using that as hard evidence opens a lot of doors, that I don’t think most people will want to go down.

On your actions and retaliation in general, I think trying to publicly humiliate them, then having them repair the whole place, THEN picking an arbitrary amount of resources you want, and demanding it from a player with no proof, then making their tribe pay for it after they quit, was just wrong, and also sets a very risky precedent that I don’t think people would be very happy with in the long run.

I am pretty damn sure if FL went and did this exact thing, there would be an outcry, from you and several others. As there has been in the past for less ridiculous things.

And before someone goes on a rant about how the same thing would have happened. FL’s market has been vandalized dozens of times (where there was something actually lost, not just a wall smacked) and there was also a real break-in attempt where a wall was almost broke through, and a tribe gate was broken down. We had more evidence than you, and two suspects. We went and investigated both, and in the end, didn’t extort whatever we wanted from them or their friends, didn’t even kill them actually. We gave them a warning that break-ins will be met with death, and the matter was done.

I’ve seen the exp gains for ‘real’ deaths from mid lvl players from friends, and it’s a HELL of a lot higher than the exp to boost to L2. So no way would a L100+ only give you that much, that was clearly duel exp being awarded for winning the match, not proper assassin exp.

Thx for reporting punchy. Hopefully this will be situated soon.

I don’t normally post often, or let my aggression out hardly ever. (with the exception of defending the roads I use to care about so much)
However, congratulations! You have just got my full attention. I work as a caregiver for the mentally disabled, and take rather great offence to these sorts of insults.
On other points, just to clarify, Sephi has never run with “special” gear. She ran with a dagger, with no atk enchantments on it, and some basic destruction gear and a normal +1 wanderer’s garb that she found in the UW. As well as her trusty, entirely non-plus/non-enchanted bone hammer. I will however, now be making her a full set of special gear, just for this very special occasion. 🙂

Along with my full attention, comes a special prize! You think that getting killed once, and not looted is bullying?(this goes to both of you) Very well, you will get a proper tutorial of what bullying is. I will harass you, I will hunt you, I will kill you, and I will completely destroy anything and everything you’ve built. You want to see a high level ‘flex’? Get ready, not that it will help you even a little. Before I’ve reserved this for only the most extreme cases, but since it’s going to be said about me, then I might as well live up to it, right? So here it is, here and now. Quiet and Wuzzy, you are done. I’d recommend quitting now, or making an alt and keeping quiet if you actually want to attempt to play this game, because those accounts are officially finished. You can try and run, or hide, or beg for help, but it won’t do a damn bit of good.

As far as the HUGE number of players/tribes/houses we’ve gone after destroyed and ‘looted’, I’m pretty sure it’s been less than half a dozen over the last, what? 4-5 months? With the last being ‘Smurfs’ which we announced multiple times to the server to come loot while we finished destroying (which they gladly did).

Also, if new policy should be going after any tribe that houses killers, trolls, and griefers, I’m more than willing to address that one in the very near future, just let me know.

And as a parting gift, I’ll present you with the last person I took a personal interest in. Blu (I know you’re still around here somewhere bud, and thx for logging on to congratulate my L106 dust gathering)

Somewhere near these lakes once lived a house. The house was broken into, the items were thrown out onto the street, the house was flooded, then destroyed, then turned into a park, back when I still cared enough to try and make nice things for players to enjoy.

    I’ll see you soon. 😉

Ivana has already posted on this matter, so I’ll leave it alone itself. I do however have to address one thing that I feel is a HORRIBLE point to try and make for development. Saying something can be potentially be exploited, therefor shouldn’t even be discussed being developed is just plain wrong. How many features in this game have been exploitable along the way? Not trivial features that had to be removed either, core pieces of the game. One of the first that comes to mind being smelting. I don’t think the game would be nearly what it is today, if people were running around only swinging wood swords at each other. lol

I know most people haven’t been around quite as long as I have, and haven’t been through or reported as many bugged or exploitable features, but this is suppose to be Alpha testing. THIS is the time to suggest features that people feel would be useful, and see if they can be created and tested and perfected. Even if they could possibly have bugs. If you disagree with that core belief for the alpha testing phase, then there is a very good chance you are playing the wrong game. Come back in a few months to a year.

There is a new highway running uninterrupted clear south to the coast from below the FL base along the 100 axis. A big ty for donations from Pyco and Stalki for this new highway, as well as Dyrir for helping create the land bridge through the new ocean.(sry cap, it’s not a whole land area though, just a bridge) There is also a scenic winding road that goes south to the desert line along axis 250. And a big ty here for Valduk and Nefer for donations and work put in! Enjoy the new world everyone!
